Spring has arrived. I look forward to warmer days ahead, reminiscent of the day I took this photo at a farm between Boyne City and East Jordan, Michigan.
Starving writers need free software. And there’s some great stuff out there. I use a variety of freeware programs that are useful for any author or writer. They’re handy when you’re writing novels, short stories, screenplays, magazine articles, you name it. Some are specialized while some programs are more general in character.
So, here’s the software I find most useful in my writing endeavors. It’s all free. It’s all for Windows operating systems. Sorry, Macintosh folks, but Windows machines are cheaper.
Ywriter is a specialized word processor specifically for novelists. It helps authors structure plot, characters and settings into a cohesive whole. It’s awesome!
To use it, you create chapters, characters and locations. But the heart of the program is the way it handles scenes. My Woolly Bugger was missing. It was Sunday afternoon, the first day of a week-long vacation, and I planned to drive up to Lime Creek for a couple of hours of fishing. But I loved that old Woolly Bugger, and it bothered me that it wasn’t where it belonged, snug in my aluminum fly box.
I’d caught at least four dozen trout with that Woolly Bugger during the last year. Even if I didn’t tie it on the line today, I wanted to bring it along. You know, kind of like a good luck charm. It seemed like a necessary component of my vacation, during which I planned to fish several streams, drink some beer, do a little backcountry hiking and maybe climb Engineer Peak. Anyway, fishing was number one on the agenda, and going fishing without that fly was unthinkable.
